Gozo – Island of Calypso

Calypso cave and Ramla bay

If you like legends you need to visit this island, because by the story this is the island from Odyssea where Odysseus had been trapped for 7 years because of nymph Calypso, who wanted to marry him and live on this island with him forever. But his patron goddess Athena asks Zeus to order the release of Odysseus from the island, and Zeus orders the messenger Hermes to tell Calypso to set Odysseus free, for it was not his destiny to live with her forever. That legend shows that her island Ogygia can be Gozo island and you can find here hers cave.

Other thing what amazes me a lot was, that on this island was filmed TV series Game of thrones, so if you are fan there is article just about Game of thrones places on Malta and Gozo. On Gozo island is place where Daenerys and Khal Drogo had their wedding it is next to Azure window but more about this in that special article.

Even If you go by car I recommend to do a mistake with turn like us and go to see Azure window from another side from the top of cliff, that view is stunning and without people around <3

It is real country side there, you go between gardens and fields but it is worth it, just go slowly and it is possible to pass by car there or by walk for sure.

ALERT!: Do not go up on the top of the Azure window. 1. you can destroy it and it would not take long 2. if is point number one not enough for you than there is fine 1500 euros if you go there 😉

UPDATE: It already happend 🙁 more here.

Whole this island is little bit different than Malta. History is breathing here from every part and if happened that you meet knight or person in really old clothes like a peasant you wouldn’t be surprised #historyporn.

Gozo from Citadel
Gozo from Citadel

We travelled around the island and the best place is up on the citadel in capital city Victoria/Rabat. You can go around the barracks a fortress walls, by that time it was all free of charge and from there you can see whole island. I was there 3rd of December after huge rains and island was whole green and absolutely amazing. Under the citadel is information centre and inside is super modern show about citadels history. I recommend to visit that place for sure.

There are many other places to see, for sure Azure window, I went down and around a rocks and I was only one, it need little bit of patience but it is possible and I made great pictures from there.

You can see huge statue of Jesus and that place is nice when is sun rise or sun set.

Other place what you can see is Sanctuary and it have great history value.

On this island you can find strange red beach named Ramla bay with huge white stone cross. They sai that it is best beach on Malta, but for me is still best beach on Malta Riviera bay.

Than you can find out historical temples there which are under UNESCO, but we were late for them, because of shopping 😀

And there is best restaurant in Malta and Gozo which have been awarded and about my experience I will write another article called Best and worst restaurants in Malta and Gozo.

On this web you can find every detail you need about Gozo, all events, restaurants and all todo: https://www.visitgozo.com

Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Internet explorer. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Many thanks
